The Colts Youth Organization launched the Colts Summer Band in 2006 to provide a performance ensemble opportunity and summer lessons for instrumental music students in grades 5-8 (entering grades 6-9 in the fall). Nearly 50 young people were members of the group in the inaugural year.
The program runs four weeks, and includes a weekly sectional rehearsal and a performance ensemble rehearsal three days per week. The 2015 program runs from June 16 - July 9. Lessons will be taught befor and after each ensemble rehearsal.
The season culminates on Tuesday, July 9, 2015, with a concert at the Alliant Energy Amphitheather at the Port of Dubuque next to the historic Dubuque Star Brewery. For "An Evening of Music by the River," the Colts Summer Band will be joined by our Pandemonium Steel Drum Ensemble and the Colt Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps.
Directors for the group are Brian Enabnit, a member of the instrumental music staff for the Dubuque schools, and Dan Norman, band director at Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School. The Dubuque Area Summer Band program was founded by Cynthia Mueller, former band director at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Dubuque.
The summer band has been using the wonderful facilities at Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School and benefits from our strong and growing partnerships with the Dubuque Community School District and the entire community.
Plans are to further expand the program in the future to include more public performances and increased enrollment. The Colts have also begun building a music library for the ensemble and for use by other local band programs during the school year.
All local programs are managed by Vicki MacFarlane, Youth Programs Director. For 2015 registration information, CLICK HERE. For more information, please contact the Colts office.
